Latest Vintage Window Creation & BIG SALE in my Etsy shop!!

I just LOVE doing these old windows. Not just the artwork, but the fact that something old-(and usually going to the landfill)- gets a recycled/refurbished/renewed life with beautiful artwork.

(This one may look uneven, but the fact of the matter is,I had to adjust the pattern to be right, and NOT go by the handle placement on the window, because the handle, in fact, is NOT in the middle of the window. However it is not very noticeable. I just left it as it was instead of taking off the handle and replacing it where it should have been. Obviously, whomever did it, did not pay much attention to detail, or they would have measured for the placement of the handle to be in the exact middle of the window.I also could have taken it off completely and filled the holes and sanded it,but it didn’t really bother me, so I just left it like it was.

I can’t wait to start on another one, however, it will have to wait until after the holidays. I hope to get up enough of a collection to have a show, with plenty of them for folks to choose from. I have some real pretty Tiffany patterns, so that may be the next one I choose. I have ALOT of patterns,so,I will just have to figure which one I want to do next.I have 2 more small window with 4 panes, another one just like this one,and several larger windows as well, so there are plenty of options where my pattern sizes and window sizes are concerned!

I am still looking for a pattern like the ones in church windows.I may end of having to make my own pattern on that one. They look SO lovely on a  windowsill, where the light comes through, but I like them to be just as pretty when the sun goes down! Some people like to hang them on their sun room ceilings, and they are also lovely on a mantel,or hung above it,but the whole thing about them,at least to me is, you really want one placed so the sun shines through it to get the true effect of “stained glass”.

Vintage Furniture Restoration

Can you believe this was headed to the dump?!

It pays off sometimes to look beyond the dirt, dust, and grime of an otherwise unwanted piece of furniture, and see a good solid wood stucture of possibility.Never mind the nicks, scrapes, and scratches….these are all part of  being “used” in every day life, and only adds to the character of a vintage piece of furniture….

I wish I could have shown you a before picture of this one.

I swept it, cleaned it really well with a clorox bleach based cleaner (it had a heavy paint job underneath, so I didn’t worry about the bleach, and it also killed any bacteria that could have been lurking), sanded it after it was fully dry, cleaned off the wood dust, and used a few cans of quality white spray paint.

Since most vintage furniture drawer pulls measure only 2- 3/4 inches, I had to special order the pulls, since everything nowadays is an “even” 3 inches.Check out flea markets, antique shops or auctions to find vintage drawer pulls, and always keep any hardware that you can get off of unsalvageable pieces. I scored these nice Antique English Chippendale Style drawer pulls on sale from www.dlawlesshardware.com.

These are a nice bunch of folks, with a huge selection of any kind of drawer pulls or knobs you could ever imagine.Excellent customer service, and fast shipping.

With some cleaning supplies, sandpaper, paint, imagination, and some good old fashioned elbow grease, you can turn a cast off into a really nice, functional piece of furniture.

This was probably sold “new” as a vanity , but it would also make a VERY nice desk. The right side has room for a chair, and behind the false drawer is a roomy storage area, where the top lifts up and has a mirror attached to the lid. It has beautiful lines, and a nice curvature on the drawers, and it’s a very attractive piece of furniture now that it was rescued! I have this for sale in my shop priced at $65.99.

What beauty and possibility  that was underneath all that neglect…trash to treasure indeed!

Refurbished Vintage Treasure

Faux painted Ash tray stand

Refurbished Ash Tray Stand

I FINALLY GOT AROUND TO REDOING THIS ASH TRAY STAND. AT THE SUGGESTION OF A FRIEND, I AM GOING TO PUT IN A BIRDS NEST WITH EGG AND BIRDIE ON TOP!YOU CAN DO THIS FAUX PAINTING, IT KIND OF LOOKS LIKE  MARBLE. YOU CAN ALWAYS PRACTICE ON A PIECE OF CARDBOARD UNTIL YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THE SIMPLE PROCESS.

SAND OFF ANY RUST, CLEAN WELL, PRIMER AND  GET SPRAY PAINT COLOR OF YOUR CHOICE. I CHOSE A NEUTRAL MEDIUM TAN COLOR. LET DRY. MAKE SURE TO GET IN ALL THE CRACKS,UNDERSIDE,ETC.

LET DRY COMPLETLY.

A SEA SPONGE WORKS BEST FOR THIS, AS IT GIVES/MAKES A NICE TEXTURE. DIP SPONGE IN WHITE ACRYLIC PAINT, DAB OFF EXCESS ON RAG OR PAPER. GENTLY DAB RANDOMLY ALL OVER, EVEN INTENTIONALLY SMUDGING SOME LIGHTLY.

A FEATHER IS THEN NEEDED. SLIDE sides of FEATHER ACROSS SAME WHITE PAINT, THEN SLIDE ACROSS RAG OR PAPER TO REMOVE EXCESS. RANDOMLY STROKE ACROSS IN DIFFERENT PLACES UNTIL YOU ARE HAPPY WITH THE LOOK.

LET DRY COMPLETELY. USE CLEAR COAT SPRAY ACRYLIC TO PROTECT PAINT PROJECT.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO TRY IT. IF YOU DON’T LIKE THE LOOK, SPRAY PAINT OVER, LET DRY, AND START AGAIN.PRACTICE ON SCRAP CARDBOARD,ETC. AND BE LOOSE WITH IT, NOT CONFINED. YOU WANT A RANDOM LOOK, NOT A PLANNED ONE. IT REALLY IS VERY EASY TO DO.

THIS HANDPAINTED STAND IS FOR SALE IN MY SHOP . IT IS VINTAGE, AND HAS A NICE ART DECO STYLE. IT IS PRICED AT $49.95. (this price does not include shipping).

OLD LIGHT COVER “CLOCHE”

THIS IS A COOL IDEA I FOUND THAT GIVES A OLD LIGHT PROTECTOR NEW LIFE AS A PRETTY HOME DECOR ITEM!

THIS IS A PRETTY NEAT RECYCLING PROJECT

MAKE SURE TO SAND OFF ANY RUST,CLEAN WELL, THEN PRIME WITH A SPRAY PRIMER USED TO KILL RUST,( MAKING SURE TO ALSO GET IT IN THE ‘UNDERSIDE’AREAS),THEN SPRAY  PAINT THE COLOR OF YOUR CHOICE.

NICE WAY TO MAKE A DESIGNER LOOK OUT OF SOMETHING THAT MIGHT HAVE GONE IN THE HEAP PILE, DON’T YOU THINK?

THIS ONE IS TOPPED WITH A PRETTY BOW AND A TAG. YOU COULD PUT IT OVER A SMALL LIVE PLANT,LIKE THIS WITH A NEST AND EGG.

YOU CAN ALWAYS CHANGE THE LOOK UNDERNEATH TO FIT INTO YOUR HOME DECOR, PLUS, YOU CAN CHANGE THE LITTLE VIGNETTE OUT FOR EACH HOLIDAY,SEASON,ETC.

I’LL BET THIS SAME LOOK WOULD COST YOU A SMALL FORTUNE IN ONE OF THOSE HIGH END HOME DECOR STORES!

ALWAYS THINK,AND THINK AGAIN BEFORE YOU DISMISS OR DISCARD SOMETHING. YOU MAY ALWAYS THINK OF AN IDEA FOR IT AT A LATER DATE……BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR INTERESTING ITEMS SUCH AS THIS.

Chic Lampshade Re-do

This is a small Vintage lamp that needed something additional to make it more interesting, and it is very simple to do.

I currently have it in my “Paris Apartment” display, but it looks great with my Shabby Chic display as well. It would work in your “boudoir”, go well with a Chic style decor as a desk lamp, and would also work in a “powder room”, or a girls room.

This lamp looks white, but it is a very light pink swirled glass, and it sits on a marble pedestal .The wiring works fine, even though the plug is one of the vintage round ones. (It is available for purchase for $15.00 plus shipping.)

I had to find a small shade for it, as the one with it was not workable, but I finally found one at a local flea market.(It’s one of those that has a dual wire that fits on the bulb).

The shade I found was kind of discolored, so I got the idea to spray paint it white, and it worked perfectly. I just let it dry/cure for a week or so, and it didn’t give off any fumes of any kind when burning the bulb.(You may want to find a spray paint for fabric instead, but only the pleated part is fabric.Underneath the fabric is plastic). I have a low 40 watt bulb in it, and have never had any problems with the shade.

I had some pretty ribbon edging with crystal droplets in pastel iridescent pinks, etc.sewn into it that I had purchased before, just because I loved it, and knew I would find the perfect use for it down the road.

I measured the length that I needed, for the top rim, and the bottom rim, and simply used glue to attach it. I think it was Aleene’s Tacky glue, or either SOBO fabric glue, I can’t remember which, but either would work. I had a bit of trouble at first until I realized it would be much easier to glue small sections at the time, and used some small clamps(like the old hair roller type) to hold it until the section I had glued adhered.(You also need another clamp to hold the piece that is yet to be glued to keep it out of the way while you work, because the crystals have weight).

It took some trial and error to do it, but I think it was just what it needed to “pretty it up”! (I have seen these in big retail stores, and they are NOT cheap!).

Chic Lampshade re-do

Chic Lampshade re-do

Don’t be afraid to use different style edgings to rehab lamp shades. The ones with feather edgings are good sellers as well, but you can also save yourself some money and do this yourself! The possibilites are only limited by your imagination! Lamps at fleas/goodwill, as long as the wiring is intact (unless you want to rewire it), are good candidates for re-doing.(It’s always a good idea to rewire very old lamps, just to be on the safe side).

There are alot of paint techniques that you can apply to the BASES of older lamps that can update them to match your decor or style, and give them a whole new look! Just remember, if you don’t like your paint job/style, you can always paint over it and start again. When you get it how you want it,(make sure to cover any wiring/sockets), and then spray with an acrylic spray to protect your work.

HAVE FUN!

Shabby Cottage Plant Hanger Re-do

THIS PLANT HANGER HAS SEEN BETTER DAYS!!

IT IS NO LONGER STURDY ENOUGH AS A PLANT HANGER ,BUT IT HAD SUCH A PRETTY DESIGN I KNEW IT COULD BE USED FOR SOMETHING ELSE.

I LOVE THE CURLS OF WIRE ALL AROUND THE OUTSIDE, AND JUST COULDN’T BEAR TO THROW IT OUT.

I FIRST USED A WIRE BRUSH TO GET ALL OF THE OLD PEELING PAINT OFF.

SINCE SOME OF THE BOTTOM  STRUCTURUAL METAL HAD COME    APART, I USED SOME LIGHTWEIGHT WIRE THAT I HAD, AND STARTED WINDING IT BACK AND FORTH AND AROUND OVER AND OVER , PULLING IT TIGHT EACH TIME AND MAKING IT SECURE ENOUGH TO STAY TOGETHER,UNTIL I HAD PUT THE ORIGINAL FORM SORT OF BACK TOGETHER AGAIN, KIND OF IN A SPIDERWEB OR WEAVING DESIGN, UNTIL IT WAS STURDY AGAIN. KIND OF LIKE HAND SEWING, BUT WITH WIRE.

I THEN SPRAY PAINTED THE WHOLE THING WHITE, USING A PIECE OF CARDBOARD BEHIND IT TO CATCH THE EXCESS PAINT AND KIND OF “THROW “IT BACK ONTO THE HANGER INSTEAD OF THE PAINT GOING OUT IN THE AIR.

I HUNG IT ON A LOW BRANCH OUTSIDE TO DO THIS, AS I COULD WALK AROUND IT SPRAY PAINTING IT, AS WELL AS GETTING A GOOD COAT ON THE UNDERSIDE, THE CURLS,AND THE CHAINS CONNECTED TO IT, AS WELL AS THE HOOK AT THE TOP.

SINCE IT IS NO LONGER STURDY ENOUGH TO HOLD A PLANT, (UNLESS IT WAS ARTIFICIAL PLANTS/FLOWERS IN A LIGHTWEIGHT PLASTIC POT), I DECIDED, AS A SHOPOWNER, THAT IT WOULD BE A GREAT PLACE TO DISPLAY VINTAGE LINENS IN THE SHOP!I

iT COULD ALSO BE USED FOR DISPLAY IN A SHOP TO HOLD OTHER LIGHTWEIGHT THINGS , LIKE GREETING CARDS, LINENS FOR SALE, STUFFED ANIMALS,APRONS, PLACEMATS,NAPKINS,POTHOLDERS,OR REALLY ANYTHING THAT WON’T PUT A STRAIN ON THE BOTTOM PART. WE ALL HAVE THINGS IN THE SHOP THAT ARE LIGHT, AND WE ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT A PRETTY AND DIFFERENT CONTAINER,SUCH AS THIS, TO DISPLAY THEM IN.

IT WOULD ALSO SERVE WELL USED IN YOUR ‘POWDER ROOM’ HANGING FROM THE CEILING TO HOLD SOME PRETTY HAND TOWELS OR BATHCLOTHS! OR EVEN TO DISPLAY SOME OF YOUR OWN VINTAGE LINENS IN YOUR HOME.

THERE IT IS. “NEW” LIFE FOR AN OLD, BUT PRETTY,PLANTHANGER!

ALWAYS REMEMBER, WHEN SEARCHING YARD SALES, THRIFTS, ETC., DONT SEE THINGS AS THEY ARE, BUT SEE THEM FOR WHAT THEY ‘”COULD”  BE , WITH JUST A LITTLE IMAGINATION AND A CREATIVE TOUCH. HAVE FUN!!

‘TIL NEXT TIME……PEGGY
