Chic Lampshade Re-do

August 31, 2008

This is a small Vintage lamp that needed something additional to make it more interesting, and it is very simple to do.

I currently have it in my “Paris Apartment” display, but it looks great with my Shabby Chic display as well. It would work in your “boudoir”, go well with a Chic style decor as a desk lamp, and would also work in a “powder room”, or a girls room.

This lamp looks white, but it is a very light pink swirled glass, and it sits on a marble pedestal .The wiring works fine, even though the plug is one of the vintage round ones. (It is available for purchase for $15.00 plus shipping.)

I had to find a small shade for it, as the one with it was not workable, but I finally found one at a local flea market.(It’s one of those that has a dual wire that fits on the bulb).

The shade I found was kind of discolored, so I got the idea to spray paint it white, and it worked perfectly. I just let it dry/cure for a week or so, and it didn’t give off any fumes of any kind when burning the bulb.(You may want to find a spray paint for fabric instead, but only the pleated part is fabric.Underneath the fabric is plastic). I have a low 40 watt bulb in it, and have never had any problems with the shade.

I had some pretty ribbon edging with crystal droplets in pastel iridescent pinks, etc.sewn into it that I had purchased before, just because I loved it, and knew I would find the perfect use for it down the road.

I measured the length that I needed, for the top rim, and the bottom rim, and simply used glue to attach it. I think it was Aleene’s Tacky glue, or either SOBO fabric glue, I can’t remember which, but either would work. I had a bit of trouble at first until I realized it would be much easier to glue small sections at the time, and used some small clamps(like the old hair roller type) to hold it until the section I had glued adhered.(You also need another clamp to hold the piece that is yet to be glued to keep it out of the way while you work, because the crystals have weight).

It took some trial and error to do it, but I think it was just what it needed to “pretty it up”! (I have seen these in big retail stores, and they are NOT cheap!).

Chic Lampshade re-do

Chic Lampshade re-do

Don’t be afraid to use different style edgings to rehab lamp shades. The ones with feather edgings are good sellers as well, but you can also save yourself some money and do this yourself! The possibilites are only limited by your imagination! Lamps at fleas/goodwill, as long as the wiring is intact (unless you want to rewire it), are good candidates for re-doing.(It’s always a good idea to rewire very old lamps, just to be on the safe side).

There are alot of paint techniques that you can apply to the BASES of older lamps that can update them to match your decor or style, and give them a whole new look! Just remember, if you don’t like your paint job/style, you can always paint over it and start again. When you get it how you want it,(make sure to cover any wiring/sockets), and then spray with an acrylic spray to protect your work.

HAVE FUN!

Ideas for Old Doors

August 29, 2008

I DON’T HAVE THE “BEFORE” PICTURES FOR YOU, BUT I JUST REALIZED I NEVER DID PUT THIS PROJECT ON MY BLOG FOR YOU!

THE DOOR IN THIS PROJECT IS STILL IN GOOD SHAPE STRUCTURALLY, AND NONE OF THE WINDOWS WERE CRACKED. IT CAN ALSO BE USED “AS” A DOOR BY FITTING ON SOME NEW HINGES!

I GOT A TEMPLATE FROM A BOOK I HAVE, AND IF YOU WANT, YOU CAN DRAW A TEMPLATE FOR YOURSELVES VERY EASILY.

I LOVE THIS FLEUR DE LIS DESIGN WITH THE LATTICEWORK.

OLD DOOR WITH FLEUR DE LIS

OLD DOOR WITH FLEUR DE LIS

THE BOTTOM IS THERE, BUT THERE IS AN ANTIQUE CHEST OF DRAWERS IN FRONT OF IT, AS I USE IT IN MY RETAIL SHOP FOR A BACKDROP, OR DIVIDER, FOR DISPLAYS, BUT THE GLASS PANELS ARE THE INTERESTING PART ANYWAY.

THIS IS A CLOSE UP OF MY TEMPLATE.

FLEUR DE LIS TEMPLATE

FLEUR DE LIS TEMPLATE

YOU CAN ALWAYS SAND IT AND PAINT IT IF YOU CHOOSE, TO MATCH YOUR DECOR, BUT I KIND OF LIKE THE SHABBY CHIC STYLE WITH THE PAINT ALL PEELING OFF.

ALL YOU DO IS PLACE/TAPE THE TEMPLATE BEHIND THE GLASS, AND PAINT IT IN ON THE FRONT.

YOU CAN PROBABLY USE ANY TYPE OF PAINT THAT YOU WANT, UNLESS IT IS GOING TO, SAY, BE OUTSIDE. THEN YOU WOULD WANT TO USE SOMETHING THAT WOULD HOLD UP TO THE ELEMENTS. THERE ARE ALL KINDS OF PAINTS OUT THERE, SO YOU MAY WANT TO USE SOMETHING YOU CAN DIP A BRUSH IN TO THAT CAN BE USED ON GLASS, OR A PAINT THAT IS SPECIFICALLY FOR GLASS.

THIS IS FOR SALE IN MY SHOP, BUT UNTIL SOMEONE PURCHASES IT, THERE IT WILL BE, RIGHT NOW SERVING AS A BACKDROP FOR SOME OF MY PARIS APARTMENT STYLE ACCESSORIES.I HAVE IT PRICED AT $125.00, so either a walk in can buy it, or someone online that REALLY wants to purchase it can pay BIG bucks for shipping it!!

I HAVE ALSO USED IT TO PROVIDE A VISUAL DIVIDE IN MY SHOP, THEREFORE PLACING IT SIDEWAYS BETWEEN DISPLAYS. IT LOOKS PRETTY NEAT IN THERE ANY WAY I USE IT,EVEN IN THE CORNERS. BEFORE THIS, I USED IT FOR MY SPRING DISPLAY, WHERE IT DOES ITS DUTY JUST AS WELL.

IN THIS PICTURE, YOU CAN SEE THAT I USED A TALL SHUTTER IN BETWEEN THIS DISPLAY, AND THE ONE BESIDE IT.

Shutter used as divider in shop. Door can also be used as a divider.

Shutter used as divider in shop. Door can also be used as a divider.

SO THERE IT IS…..ANOTHER GREAT IDEA FOR AN OLD DOOR AND VERY EASY TO DO AS WELL.

I HAVE SEEN MANY IDEAS FOR OLD DOORS, INCLUDING:

  1.  ADDING SHELVES TO THE DOOR
  2.  JUST USING IT IN A RETAIL OR HOME DECOR SETTING ,SECURED TO A WALL THAT NEEDS FILLING WITH SOMETHING, WITH JUST A WREATH HANGING ON THE DOOR. (MINE WILL HAVE SOME KIND OF PAINTED WORD SIGN ON IT….WHEN I GET TO THAT PROJECT)!!
  3. USING IT AS A POTTING BENCH BY ATTACHING SHELVING TO IT ON THE BOTTOM FRONT, WITH AN AWNING ATTACHED TO THE TOP, WHICH LOOKED REALLY NICE!

I TOOK SOME QUICKPICS JUST TO SHOW YOU JUST A FEW ITEMS WITH THE DISPLAY THAT ARE FOR SALE IN MY SHOPPE IN THE “PARIS APARTMENT” STYLE.

THIS PLANT HANGER HAS SEEN BETTER DAYS!!

IT IS NO LONGER STURDY ENOUGH AS A PLANT HANGER ,BUT IT HAD SUCH A PRETTY DESIGN I KNEW IT COULD BE USED FOR SOMETHING ELSE.

I LOVE THE CURLS OF WIRE ALL AROUND THE OUTSIDE, AND JUST COULDN’T BEAR TO THROW IT OUT.

I FIRST USED A WIRE BRUSH TO GET ALL OF THE OLD PEELING PAINT OFF.

SINCE SOME OF THE BOTTOM  STRUCTURUAL METAL HAD COME    APART, I USED SOME LIGHTWEIGHT WIRE THAT I HAD, AND STARTED WINDING IT BACK AND FORTH AND AROUND OVER AND OVER , PULLING IT TIGHT EACH TIME AND MAKING IT SECURE ENOUGH TO STAY TOGETHER,UNTIL I HAD PUT THE ORIGINAL FORM SORT OF BACK TOGETHER AGAIN, KIND OF IN A SPIDERWEB OR WEAVING DESIGN, UNTIL IT WAS STURDY AGAIN. KIND OF LIKE HAND SEWING, BUT WITH WIRE.

I THEN SPRAY PAINTED THE WHOLE THING WHITE, USING A PIECE OF CARDBOARD BEHIND IT TO CATCH THE EXCESS PAINT AND KIND OF “THROW “IT BACK ONTO THE HANGER INSTEAD OF THE PAINT GOING OUT IN THE AIR.

I HUNG IT ON A LOW BRANCH OUTSIDE TO DO THIS, AS I COULD WALK AROUND IT SPRAY PAINTING IT, AS WELL AS GETTING A GOOD COAT ON THE UNDERSIDE, THE CURLS,AND THE CHAINS CONNECTED TO IT, AS WELL AS THE HOOK AT THE TOP.

SINCE IT IS NO LONGER STURDY ENOUGH TO HOLD A PLANT, (UNLESS IT WAS ARTIFICIAL PLANTS/FLOWERS IN A LIGHTWEIGHT PLASTIC POT), I DECIDED, AS A SHOPOWNER, THAT IT WOULD BE A GREAT PLACE TO DISPLAY VINTAGE LINENS IN THE SHOP!I

iT COULD ALSO BE USED FOR DISPLAY IN A SHOP TO HOLD OTHER LIGHTWEIGHT THINGS , LIKE GREETING CARDS, LINENS FOR SALE, STUFFED ANIMALS,APRONS, PLACEMATS,NAPKINS,POTHOLDERS,OR REALLY ANYTHING THAT WON’T PUT A STRAIN ON THE BOTTOM PART. WE ALL HAVE THINGS IN THE SHOP THAT ARE LIGHT, AND WE ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT A PRETTY AND DIFFERENT CONTAINER,SUCH AS THIS, TO DISPLAY THEM IN.

IT WOULD ALSO SERVE WELL USED IN YOUR ‘POWDER ROOM’ HANGING FROM THE CEILING TO HOLD SOME PRETTY HAND TOWELS OR BATHCLOTHS! OR EVEN TO DISPLAY SOME OF YOUR OWN VINTAGE LINENS IN YOUR HOME.

THERE IT IS. “NEW” LIFE FOR AN OLD, BUT PRETTY,PLANTHANGER!

ALWAYS REMEMBER, WHEN SEARCHING YARD SALES, THRIFTS, ETC., DONT SEE THINGS AS THEY ARE, BUT SEE THEM FOR WHAT THEY ‘”COULD”  BE , WITH JUST A LITTLE IMAGINATION AND A CREATIVE TOUCH. HAVE FUN!!

SHABBY CHIC CABINET DOOR

April 28, 2008

THIS IS AN OLD SMALL CABINET DOOR THAT I AQUIRED.

I DECIDED TO DO A COMBINATION OF PAINTING/STENCILING AND DECOUPAGE IN A SHABBY CHIC STYLE.

AS YOU CAN SEE, IT WAS IN FAIRLY GOOD SHAPE EXCEPT FOR SOME MOLD ON THE BACK SIDE.

I SPRAY PAINTED THE WHOLE THING WHITE, COVERING THE OLD GLASS KNOB. THE BACK HAD SOME MOLD ON SOME TYPE OF PRESSBOARD BACK. AFTER SPRAY PAINTING, I THEN USED A CLEAR ACRYLIC SPRAY OVER THE PRESS BOARD BACK, THEN SPRAYED WITH THE WHITE AGAIN TO COVER THE MOLDED PART. THAT PRETTY MUCH SEALED IT IN AND COVERED IT.

I THEN PAINTED THE TWO INSIDE FRONT PANELS WITH AN ACRYLIC PAINT IN  THE COLOR “SANDSTONE”.

THEN  I USED SOME PRETTY WALLPAPER BORDER THAT I HAD IN MY COLLECTION, AND CUT OUT THE FLOWER DESIGNS AND PLACED THEM THE WAY I WANTED THEM, BUT NOT GLUING THEM ON YET.

THEN, I USED A STENCIL IN A PRETTY SCRIPT STYLE, AND USED STENCIL CREME, WHICH IS ALOT LESS MESSY!!!!!

I THOUGH IT WOULD BE PRETTY IN A BATHROOM, SO I CHOSE TO USE THE WORD “SOAP”. YOU CAN CHOOSE TO USE ANY WORD/WORDS YOU WANT. I DID THIS ON THE TOP PANEL, AND ON THE BOTTOM PANEL I JUST HAND WROTE THE WORDS FRENCH MILLED SOAP, AND USED A MARKER TO GO OVER IT.

YOU COULD ALSO TURN THIS WITH THE KNOB DOWN, AND WRITE TWO WORDS, AND USE THE PRETTY GLASS KNOB TO HANG A HAND TOWEL ON. IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE ON THE VERTICAL LIKE I HAVE DONE IT.

I THEN GLUED ON THE FLOWERS, LEAVES, AND TWO STRIPS FROM THE BORDER FROM THE PRETTY WALLPAPER IN THE DESIGN THAT I WANTED.

THAT’S PRETTY MUCH ALL THERE IS TO IT, EXCEPT FOR TIDYING UP PLACES WHERE I SMEARED PAINT ON THE WHITE PART WHICH I CAN EASILY TOUCH UP.

I WILL THEN SPRAY THE ENTIRE DOOR WITH A CLEAR ACRYLIC SPRAY (OUT SIDE OF COURSE) WHEN THE PAINT IS DRY AND CURED FOR A FEW DAYS, AND THIS WILL PROTECT YOUR HANDY WORK.

I THINK IT TURNED OUT SO PRETTY…….AND THERE ARE SO MANY VARIATIONS THAT CAN BE DONE WITH THIS.

YOU CAN USE ANY THEME YOU WISH.

WELL, HAVE FUN!!!!  UNTIL NEXT TIME……..Peggy

SPRING/ EASTER IDEAS

March 4, 2008

SPRING IS ON THE WAY!

I ACTUALLY GOT PART OF THIS IDEA FROM A TRASH TO TREASURE FRIEND, BUT PUT MY OWN TOUCHES TO IT.

YOU KNOW THOSE DOMED GLASS CHEESE KEEPERS? WELL, THESE DAYS YOU CAN GET THEM AT YARD SALES OR GOODWILL FOR NEXT TO NOTHING.

I DECIDED TO USE THE DOMED TOP, AND USED A CLEAR GLASS PLATE FOR THE BOTTOM. YOU CAN  USE THE ORIGINAL BASE OF THE CHEESE KEEPER AS WELL.

THIS IS A CUTE IDEA FOR SPRING OR EASTER THAT YOU CAN DO YOURSELF.

I AM PUTTING TWO PICTURES UP BECAUSE ONE SHOWS THE TOP AND TAG BETTER THAN THE OTHER ONE, AND ONE SHOWS THE EGG IN THE NEST BETTER .

(HERE IS THE FIRST PICTURE THAT SHOWS THE NEST AND EGG BETTER.)

hpim0811.jpg

I DIDN’T HAVE A NEST ON HAND,SO I MADE ONE MYSELF OUT OF SPANISH MOSS.

IT WILL FORM EASILY INTO A NEST BY JUST WORKING IT WITH YOUR HANDS UNTIL YOU GET THE SIZE YOU WANT.

I PUT A SIMPLE PAPER DOILY ON THE BOTTOM.

I HAD A FEW WOODEN EGGS ON HAND, SO I JUST PAINTED ONE A NICE BLUE,USING ACRYLIC PAINT.

AFTER THAT DRIED, I USED AN OLD TOOTHBRUSH AND SOME CHOCOLATE BROWN ACRYLIC PAINT, (USING MY THUMB TO MAKE IT SPATTER)TO PUT ON SOME BROWN SPECKLES TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE A REAL EGG. THEN, I COATED IT WITH SOME ACRYLIC CLEAR SEALER TO MAKE IT SHINE AFTER THE SPATTER DRIED.

I THEN FOUND SOME PRETTY RIBBON IN THE SAME COLOR BLUE, AND ALSO MADE A SMALL BOW WITH SOME PRETTY BLUE AND PEACH FLORAL PRINT PASTEL WIRED RIBBON.

I THEN ATTACHED A VINTAGE STYLE EASTER TAG  WITH THE SAME COLORS TO FINISH IT OFF.

(HERE IS THE SECOND PICTURE THAT SHOWS THE PRETTY EASTER TAG AND RIBBONS)

hpim0810.jpg

I THINK IT TURNED OUT SO PRETTY, AND I LOVE THE SPRING COLORS!

MY TRASH TO TREASURE FRIEND ALSO HAD SOME NESTS IN JARS, LIKE MASON JARS, WHICH YOU COULD DO THE SAME THING WITH, AND ADD YOUR OWN COLORS AND EMBELLISHMENTS TO!

IF YOU DON’T HAVE ANY WOODEN EGGS ON HAND, BUT DO HAVE SOME PLASTIC ONES (VERY CHEAP AT DOLLAR STORES), YOU CAN USE THE DECOUPAGE’ METHOD AND FIND SOME PRETTY PAPER, LIKE SPARE WRAPPING PAPER SCRAPS, PRETTY TISSUE,OR EVEN GOLD OR SILVER, TO COVER THE PLASTIC EGG.

REMEMBER, THE EGG DOES NOT HAVE TO BE BLUE! YOU CAN MAKE IT ANY COLOR YOU WISH. THERE ARE A LOT OF REAL BIRDS EGGS OUT THERE IN SO MANY DIFFERENT COLORS.

HAVE FUN MAKING YOUR OWN, OR COMING UP WITH AN ORIGINAL CREATION! IT’S YOUR PROJECT, SO USE  YOUR OWN FAVORITE COLORS!

IT MAKES A VERY PRETTY SPRING OR EASTER DISPLAY, DON’T YOU THINK?

THANKS FOR READING AND VISITING MY BLOG!

IDEAS FOR OLD WINDOWS

February 21, 2008

I love old windows! I recently aquired 5 and finally got around to doing something with one of them that I have had planned for a long time.

Mind you, I still have to paint the back before I can put it in the shop for sale, but I thought I’d better show it to you now, so you can get started on yours.

hpim0796.jpg

These old windows can be picked up inexpensively at flea markets, etc. for about $8.00 or so, but if you can find an old house that someone is remodling, you might score some for free! And there’s no rule that says you can’t use new windows, but they may be way more expensive, and besides, I like the look of the old ones better.

You’ll want to thoroughly clean your window. I first used a soft brush to get off the dust. Then I cleaned it with mild soap and water to get off any more residue. You may want to sand off any old paint to make it smooth, or you may want to use it as it is. Just make sure to sand lightly over any parts that may be chipping, so you will get an even finish, and clean off the sanding dust with a damp rag . You may even want to leave it natural, and just do the panes. It’s really up to you how you want your window to look!

All you need is spray paint, and some lace in a pattern that you like.

Lace panels can be found in thrift or Goodwill stores for next to nothing, or you may have some lace, or old lace panel curtains that you could use.

It’s a good idea to heavily starch and iron your lace pieces so that they will lay flat on the glass part of your window. You could even use spray adhesive to hold them down, but I chose not to because I didn’t want any unessecary film on the glass part of the window

Just measure one or two pieces of lace the same size as your window panes and cut them out.

Lay them down on the panes and make sure they are flat and there aren’t any places that are sticking up. It must lay completely flat against the panes.

Then, take your spray paint, any color you wish, (I used a light taupe color), and spray uniformly over your lace.

Continue carefully spraying the sides or wood part.

(If you want the window frame,or wood parts, a different color than your lace panes, then you may want to spray it first, and just put some pieces of poster paper or newpaper, cut the size of your panes to cover them, to prevent overspray on your panes. But then you have to cover the sides to prevent overspray on the frame, or wood part.

Pick up the lace carefully after a couple of minutes, and let dry completely.

That’s all there is to it!

I think they are very pretty and chic, and would look great on a fireplace mantle or hung on the wall. They are also nice for shop props as well, and can be hung from the ceiling. You could also hang things from the top to display things in your shop as a background for your items.

You could use them on a porch or in a sunroom as well.

I am already gathering ideas for the other windows, and will post them in this category when I have some more to show you.

Have fun doing your own, and don’t forget to visit my shop to see some of the new prim inventory that I have !

I am currently working on a website, and will post the link on here when I get it all done.
